Why I Support The Irons

WORDS: TOM VICTOR

It hasn’t always been easy supporting West Ham over the past two decades, but amidst the ups and downs at Upton Park there have been more than enough memorable moments and dubious heroes to fill a questionable, claret-tinted version of Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’. No seriously…

When TheInsideLeft asked me to write an article about supporting West Ham, one of the first things that came to mind was the range of wonderful players who stayed at the club for short periods of time, providing one or two great memories, before moving on.

Maybe that can be attributed to the transitory nature of middle-to-lower Premier League clubs in the Sky Sports era, or maybe it’s just a by-product of spending several years with Harry Redknapp as manager and no transfer windows.

Either way, here – set to the tune of ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ – you will find a smorgasbord of great talents, memorable one-off incidents and extremely contrived rhymes. I’ll apologise to Billy Joel once he apologises for the original…

Kepa Blanco, Ian Pearce
Guille Franco, Tyrone Mears
Relegation, Play-off finals, Danny Gabbidon

Carlos Tevez kept us up
Reo-Coker, McAnuff
Slaven Bilic, Sasa Ilic, David Bellion

Tony Cottee coming back
Giving Avram Grant the sack
Robert Green and Robbie Keane and Lansbury in goal

Newton’s cocaine, Lama’s weed
Freddie Sears with all his speed
Bringing back James Collins and re-signing Joey Cole

Why I support the Irons
Even through the struggles we’re still blowing bubbles.

Why I support the Irons
We’ve been far from perfect but the wins are worth it

Shaka Hislop, David James
Savio played just 10 games
Diamanti, Di Michele, Ashton’s injuries

Margas with his claret hair
Signing Aliadiere
Steven Gerrard’s 30-yarder, Anton’s penalty

Ravel giving Spurs the slip
Back up from the Championship
Freddie Ljungberg playing half a season with a broken hip

Those who Redknapp almost signed
Sinclair, Noble, Zavon Hines
When Zamora scored that goal that never even crossed the line

Why I support the Irons
Even through the struggles we’re still blowing bubbles

Why I support the Irons
We’ve been far from perfect but the wins are worth it

Scotty Parker’s little turns
Gary Charles and Winterburn
Keller, Bellers, Neil Mellor, Ludek Miklosko

Penalties from Julian Dicks
Neil Warnock crying ‘fix’
Kovac, Stimac, Lazaridis and Jermain Defoe

Great attack and shit defence
Roger Johnson, Jordan Spence
Hartson, Kitson, Don Hutchison, double Paulo – so intense!

Omoyinmi’s second chance
Faubert coming in from France
Now we’re stuck with Carlton Cole and Kevin Nolan’s chicken dance

Why I support the Irons
Even through the struggles we’re still blowing bubbles

Why I support the Irons
We’ve been far from perfect but the wins are worth it
